Design trends are now becoming more bold, daring and colourful, and so are tiles. They are no longer basic, and functional products, they are now expressive design pieces. Tiles can take many forms; they can be ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone.
Until recently ceramic tiles have been the most popular choice for domestic use, and porcelain for commercial use, but trends are changing. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are both man made tiles but the difference is that ceramic consists of a clay backing with a glazed top whereas porcelain is vitrified. This means they are through body, the colour on the top goes all the way through. They are denser and extremely durable also making them heat and frost resistant. You will now find that there is no particular tile for any specific area. Although, porcelain tiles are ideal for use with under floor heating.
Natural stone on the other hand is exactly as the name suggests, stones quarried directly from the ground. Natural stones include marble, limestone, terracotta and slate. Stone is very versatile and a suitable surface for any type of foot traffic and room function. Natural stone is a material that stands out in every type of home or décor.
Glass tiles are extremely popular; they give a very contemporary and modern twist to any tiling. Glass can be used on its own as kitchen splash backs or as a border design feature.
Mosaic tiles can be used on either floor or walls and they add a great splash of colour. We would often recommend mosaic tiles for wet room areas as they are more flexible than regular tiles in sloped floors. If you have a design flare you can make all types of features using mosaic then it is bespoke!
